Pie Cantiones, Printed 1582 and 1625
Pie Cantiones was publishe in 1582 and, somewhat revised, in 1625. The Reformation in Sweden, inaugurated by Gustav Vasa, had yet to achieve its full impact on schools an churches. Organ music was introduced, and songs in vernacular, but the old Latin repertoire was still very much alive.
Schools, by tradition, were responsible for liturgical singing. Duriong the Middle Ages, the scholars were taught by school masters and vicars choral, but they were now superseeded by the Cantor. The more talent singers learnt to sing polyphonic church music. The scholars eked out the school finances by singing at funerals, and school choirs were engaged by royal and ducal courts.
Some of the earlier Latin repetoire is included in the Pie Cantiones anthology, which consists mainly of unison songs but also contains figural music.
