Riding the kick

| Now I want to tell about Shrove Tuesday
also called Pancake Day. But first
I looked up some words in my dictionary: Shrove
Tuesday = Fettisdag I am curious why they call it Pancake Day in English. In Sweden pancake is not the dish for fettisdag. We eat brown beans and cook the beans in sauce. The sauce is brown like the beans. We eat fried salted pork to the beans. (bacon) |

A semla |
|
On Tuesday 6 weeks before Easter, vi celebrate Fettisdag. In Sweden we use to eat a kind of bun with almond paste and cream in it. You cut off the top of the bun and make a hollow in the under part of the bun. Then you put almond paste and cream in the hollow. After it, put back the top on the bun. We use to eat the semlor at Lent time. But you already can buy the semlor in January. We only eat the semlor on Tuesdays. You can eat the semla to your coffee. But you also can eat the bun, (semla) on a deep plate with hot milk beside the semla. That is a more an old fashioned way to eat it. Nowadays most people only eat it with the coffee without the milk. You can bake the semlor yourself or buy it in the shop. |

Then we have brown bean in a brow sauce and salted fried pork to lunch or dinner. It's the meaning you shall eat much because later the time of fasting begind and then you may not eat so much. Formerly fettisdag was a real festivity for the people who lived in the wood cabins. They got free from work and they went to dance at night. They played accordion and fiddle to the dance. Unfortunately people even were drinking that night. Nowadays you also can get free. But not people all get free. At my work we got 4 hours free to go out for sports. But if it is minus 17 degrees Celsius, nobody want to go out. This day the university has the Student Sport Day. And we who are working also get free to do some sport. You can go skiing, ride the kick-sleigh, walk or go slalom-skiing on a sport place. you can put on you skies beside your home, because we always have much snow this time of the year.
And when you come home from the sport
you can eat the semla with milk or you drink hot coffee to it |
