| The Dog[1999-02-10]"Wauff!" The man turned his head, and noticed a dog on his left. It was a small dog; he wasn't quite sure, but he believed it to be a fox-terrier. The dog sat panting on the street next to him. "The heat is taxing on everyone today", the man said to himself, "even dogs..." The man was stood next to a bus-stop sign, waiting for the next public transport to arrive. What he did not know, was that his bus had been involved in an accident earlier this day, and would not be able to come by to pick him up. Time went by. Seconds became minutes. Minutes turned into hours. When nearly one and a half hour had passed, the man gave up. He turned around and started walking home instead. Sure, it was 37 degrees C in the shadow, a clear sky and no wind, and he had 12 kilometres to walk, but that sure was better than standing here waiting. As soon as be passed the dog, the dog got up and began following him. At first, he got irritated and tried to shoo the dog off, but when he noticed that he was unable to get the dog off his tracks, he decided that it was futile. After a while he got quite used to the thought of having the dog around. After all, it wasn't doing him any harm, and it was nice to have at least some company on a day where everyone else stayed inside the air-conditioned houses. And the dog didn't ask stupid questions either, or neither did it try to talk about the weather. "Thanks a lot for that", he thought to himself. |
