| The Mail-addict[1999-01-29]My name is David, and I'm a mail-addict. A slave under the reign of the almighty Internet and its messaging system. I live under the tyranny of E-mail. I know, I know, noone ever forces me to read all the mail I receive. Noone would expect me to harvest through 1500 E-mails each week. But I still do. Of course, I try to clean up a bit before starting to read, and I constantly expand my list of unwanted mail. "Spam, spam, spam." (Enter singing vikings...) Sound familiar, right? Filtering or not, I still receive massive loads of mail that I feel an urge to read. Some days I don't, but that only means more to read the next day... Still, I enjoy receiving the mail, just as much as I enjoy when people write letters to me. Almost. I still prefer letters, or snail-mail as most hackers would say. But I receive very few real letters these days. Of course, I get snail-mail virtually every day, but 99 cases out of 100 it's just message from the bank, my political party, computer related stuff, or other semi- or non-personal stuff. After all, it could be worse. I was an IRC-addict for a while (a week or two) and I have a few friends that are so deep into MUD-playing that they neglect everything else... So, I guess my mail-addiction isn't that horrible at all. I get to communicate with people, at least. Now, one could argue that I should get myself one or a few real pen-pals instead. But I won't. And there are two reasons: a.) I'm too lazy. b.) My handwriting is totally illegible (ok, I could write it on a computer and print it, but that'd be almost like sending e-mail anyway.) Still, I look forward every day to receiving real, personal snail-mail. And you know what? I look forward to reading e-mail too. Even if the dose is quite inhumane and probably not good for whatever's left of my mental health. I look forward to the e-mail, because my name is David, and I'm a mail-addict. |
