Thoughts!Non-ThoughtsThoughts
| With Trembling Knees[1999-02-24]The train stopped, and some passengers got on. One of them was a girl. Or rather, several of them were, but this girl was for some reason special. He could not quite pin-point the thing with her that made him feel that way, but he felt deep down in his stomach that there was something special about her. The girl took off her coat, laid it down on the seat opposed to his, and sat down next to it. He inspected her briefly. She was wearing white trousers, a white shirt and some sort of cardigan. The colour of her hair was somewhere in between brown and black, and her eyes were brown as hazels. Careful not to be noticed, he let his eyes trace the figure of her face. Her apparition was simply enchanting. He began to feel uneasy, because he almost couldn't take his eyes off her, even though he wanted to. Not because he disliked watching her, but rather because he was afraid that she might get offended if she noticed that he was watching her. To find himself a reason not to look at her, he decided to take a leg- strecher, so he got up. As he began to rise, he caught a glimpse of her face again. His knees began to shake. Only a little, but enough to make him even more determined that he had to get away from her immediately, unless he'd make a fool out of himself. With a yank, the train started moving again. The sudden movement got him off balance, causing him to fall in her direction. As he fell the short distance, a thought flew through his mind. "Oh no! Now I've made a fool out of myself. She'll hate me for that." But the girl didn't say a thing. She just smiled at him as he, with a nervous voice, tried to beg her for forgiveness. He hurried off. He just couldn't stand this anymore. He walked away towards the next wagon; he knew that it was the "view"-wagon. It was some strange idea the train-company had gotten the other year; they'd added a wagon that contained one very large window on each side. It was made for sight-seeing. The Alps were quite impressive to watch, of course, but he hadn't really given them much thought before. But this felt like the perfect moment to have a look at the snow-covered mountain-tops. He leaned against the metal-bar that sat in front of the window, and looked out. Suddenly he felt an almost electric sensation in his left hand. Something had brushed against it very faintly. He glanced to his left, and noticed, almost in panic, that the girl was standing next to him. He could feel the scent of her shampoo, and he nearly choked on the wonderful sensation he felt when he inhaled the air around her. The train slowed down, to stop at a station. This time, it was she who was pushed towards him. For an instant, a sling of her hair touched his face, and a single straw of her hair got stuck on his collar. His knees began to yield underneath him again. And so, suddenly, she leant over, kissed him gently on the cheek, and walked away as quickly as she had appeared. Confused, he began to follow her, only to realise that she must have picked up her things and stepped off at the station. In despair, he grabbed all his things and rushed to the door. At the same instant as he opened the door, the train began moving again. Without really knowing what he was doing, he jumped out. Safely on the platform, he looked around. But the wonderful girl was nowhere to be seen. In fact, not a single person could be seen except the station- master. The station-master looked at him with a somewhat confused expression on his face. "How come you got off the train here?", the Station-master demanded. "This is no ordinary station. The train merely stops here to pick up goods." At those words, he turned to look at the train again, only to catch a glimpse of the girl through the rear-window of the train. The girl had a very surprised look. "No wonder", he thought to himself, and fell down to his knees, crying desperately... |
