| Beyond the Door[1999-03-02]The door was locked. Firmly locked. He had probably tried to get it open at least a dozen times, failing every time. He simply couldn't get past it, to get a quick glance at what lay beyond. The secret heaven beyond the door, the unknown treasures or dark, well buried secrets that were kept on the other side of that very door. He simply had to get past. Only that there was no ordinary lock on the door. It had a normal handle, but no visible lock; neither mechanical nor magnetic. No burglar-alarms attached, nothing. And still, the door was locked in place. Just like that. He almost began to suspect magic. But magic wasn't something that existed outside the worlds of Tolkien's, Lewis' and other fantasy writers. The door didn't seem jammed in place; in fact, it yielded a few millimetres if you pulled it, but then it just refused moving any further. He had even tried opening it with a crowbar. But only the framing got damaged, the door was still there, luring. And then one day, a girl of eight or so, walked up to him and asked him why he didn't simply ask the door to open. He answered, almost irritated, that something that stupid wouldn't work. The girl sighed, and told him that he could at least try. He didn't want to. But he tried it anyway. And the door to his mind and beyond came wide open. |
