THE MIST BEETS - Dorkabilly Sounds CD (Get Fisted Records)
Three guys from Portland, Oregon, who have released their second album on their own label. I'm not too crazy about the ''Dorkabilly'' thing, but it's a fitting description of their sound. Musically competent students pretending to be rednecks.
Rockabilly meets post-grunge indie rock with a bit of experimentation I guess. Lyrically they're not very serious at all. If your only reference is Punk I'd describe them as a nice, friendly version of THE CHILDMOLESTERS.
This is quite entertaining at first. The Mist Beets Song had a few lines that made me laugh, which is rare enough when I'm reviewing some DIY product. There are some really good ideas here.
However, the joke wears a bit thin after about half the album. Last track Poopy Hands - about low quality toilet paper - isn't that funny at all. Like their hero Frank Zappa - whose Hungry Freaks Daddy is covered here - the band's songs often turn into novelty stuff only, without any lasting value at all.
As a 4 or 5-track ep this would have been a good enough indie release, and not without some commercial potential. Token Funny Guys on MTV Alternative Nation or something. And I mean that in a good way.
Their letter to me was adressed to ''Mr. Backman'', I don't think anyone has called me that since Chealsea Police sent me a Noise Nuisance note back when I lived in London. Mrs Mist Beet must have tought her children some manners. Very nice. The first band to call me ''Sir'' will get a good review no matter what. Bribes might work too. Swedish currency prefered.
