ADAM WEST - RIGHT ON CD ADAM WEST - Rigth On Promo CD (IUTFPLYIP Rec)
It's all pretty fast rock'n'roll/punk/70's hard rock on this one. Some of it is quite good, some of it isn't. Like the AC/DC intro to Swagger is great but then it turns into some Danzig song. Sounds like a mix of old Kiss, Guns'n'Roses and Electric Frankenstein to me. With not enough of the EF part.

Just look at the cover - girl, custom chopper and flames - if this is what your record collection looks like and you're wearing a Kiss t-shirt (note: it doesn't matter if you actually like Kiss or not) you'll probably want this too.

The european version has Erotic Neurotic (the Saints) as a bonus song, which they do reasonably well. All and all this isn't bad but there's too much rock and not enough punk for me.

THE NOMADS - Up-tight Promo CD (White Jazz Rec)
Back in the days when The Nomads were young I was busy with bands like Discharge and The Dead Kennedys, but I did tape a live show from the radio which I've played today. It's amazing how little have changed in the band's sound. Like every Swede I've seen them a few times and they're a good live band too.

If you don't know The Nomads (!?) they're somewhere between the Saints and 60's garage but with their own sound. Sweden used to have a lot of these bands in the early 80's - they all toured Spain a few times and then disappeared. The Nomads survived, probably 'cause they're really into this kinda stuff and wasn't jumping any band wagon (how could they? - they started it). Writing decent songs and playing them well helped too. There's a lesson to be learned here.

This is pretty much just another Nomads record. What can I say? Produced by Chips of Sator so it's a little on the clean and poppy side, but it still sounds like the Nomads and nothing else.

Though there's no This Ain't The Summer Of Love (I'm predicatable, I know) on this one buying it is a good start for any Nomads virgin and the old fans won't change their minds about the band after hearing this. I've got too much punk rock brain damage to play this before I go out drinking but it's perfect for the early morning beer and cigarettes session when you get back home.

And for all you Sex Pistols fans - guitarist Hasse's dad was the guy who filmed the Stockholm July 28 1977 gig and provided the tapes for the Bad Boys bootleg LP.

THE NOMADS - UP-TIGHT CD

MARYSLIM - MARYSLIM CD MARYSLIM - Maryslim Promo CD (White Jazz Rec)
More Scandinavian rock. Mid to up-tempo 70's hard rock with wah-wah guitar solos and titles like Rock'n'roll Action Hero. Recorded at Sunlight Studios with the usual Stockholm sound.

The faster songs are almost ok, but there's too much Kiss type rock here. The songs are too long and the choruses are sort of too much pop - Do you wanna, do you wanna go to the midnight show repeated a million times. The lyrics sound like clichés and lack attitude - We're the saints from hell. Yeah right. I'm sure you are. There's this creepy mainstream feel to it. Like ''best new rock'' at some TV music award show. Of course it's better than the average song on the radio, but that's all. Could have done without the long Robert Plant ending of the songs too.
Lee Ving where are you?

If you love the new Hellacopters stuff you might like this, but then again maybe not.

V/A - Alpha Motherfuckers - A tribute to Turbonegro DBL CD (Bitz Core Rec)
I never really liked all those ''Tribute To...'' records as they're usually full of non-existing bands/friends of the guy running the label and no good to anyone. This is a lot better as there's some real bands here. Too bad most of them aren't half as good as Turbonegro was.

NASHVILLE PUSSY opens with Age Of Pamparious which is like the original but the vocals aren't as good. The same goes for THERAPY's version of Denim Demon, but it's a better song. AMULET, from Norway like Turbonegro, do a metallish Trbngr Hate The Kids and SUPERSUCKERS tries to do Get It On but their version just makes the song sound like what it is - stolen riffs. The originality added by Turbonegro is gone.

BELA B. & DENIM GIRL (Blumchen?) have done an AOR pop version of Are You Ready For Some Darkness?. B+ for trying. D- for failing. QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE's Back To Dungaree High is ok. Finland's HIM have gone all Marilyn Manson with their Rendezvous With Anus. SATYRICON do I Got Erection which is funny in it's own Black Metal way. The best one so far.

MARYSLIM's already reviewed. They do No Beast So Fearce and had it been on their CD it would have been the best song. Here it isn't. Germany's SCOT FREE sounds very german when they do Rock Against Ass and that's not a good thing.

NULLSKATTESNYLTERNE's Sailor Man has some saxophone which is 'alright if you like saxophones' and you know what that means, don't you? Prince Of The Rodeo with HOT WATER MUSIC at least rocks on in a decent tempo. Bad Mongo is a great song but with GRIFFIN it's just embarassing metal. Thank god for ZEKE putting things right with Midnight Nambla complete with dirty old men moaning and babies crying. PEEPSHOW's Just Flesh isn't bad either.

SPACEBITCH can't quite cut it on Don't Say Motherfucker, Motherfucker. MOTORPSYCHO's He's A Grunge Whore is mellow rockabilly. A bit like Tom Waits actually. Good Head is still a good song, though not great when done by ADZ. I sort of like THE DWARWES/SPLITTIN WIX's Hobbit Motherfuckers and PUFFBALL's Zonked Out On Hashish, both for being unpleasant sounding.

MOTOSIERRA's version of Hobbit Motherfuckers and SAMESUGAS (I Fucked) Betty Page are just about ok. RATOS DE PORAO - Suburban Anti-Christ - sounds like they always do. It's good. Doing your own version is always more intersesting. THE REAL MCKENZIES almost do that with Sailor Man and TOBY DAMMIT definitely does it with Prince Of The Rodeo. The last one sounds like a soundtrack to a film.

This is a ltd ed with a bonus CD with 10 additional songs. This one opens with Age Of Pamparious too. Same problem with the vocals. The band is SCOT FREE (again). MORAL HAZARD's I Got Erection is too metal. Black Chrome with RED HOT LOVERS is maybe late Misfits meets late Black Flag and not very good. THE GRAVY BOYS' Destination Hell is so distorted it sounds like synths; it's ok but too long. Self Destructo Blues by SCARED OF CHAKA is really good except the middle part. JERRY SPIDER GANG has some metal problems with Toodlepip Fuck. Then it's Self Destructo Blues again, and again pretty much ok, this time with THREE YEARS DOWN . PETER PAN's Don't Say Motherfucker, Motherfucker is done sort of punkabilly and it suits the song. CELLOPHANE SUCKERS and PROLLHEAD! at least translated the lyrics to I'm In Love With The Destructive Girls and Good Head (Gut Bläst) into German, but by the time the CD got to their tracks I was kinda bored with it.

The main problem with this CD and the music on it is that Turbonegro were so good at what they were doing it's hard to improve the songs. What you get are a bunch of bands doing bad to ok versions of great songs. Who needs it? I'm sure Turbonegro are flattered and the bands had a good time doing it but that's it. Stick to the originals. You'll get the two best LPs - Ass Cobra and Apocalypse Dudes - for the same price as this DBL CD anyway.

Turbonegro themselves are doing a reunion tour this summer or so I'm told.
