PUNK AND THE SWASTIKA
I, and probably everyone else doing a Sex Pistols site, always get some mail from confused people asking if the Sex Pistols were nazis. The less intelligent usually accuse me of being one too, since I'm a fan of the band. After last month's addition of an Oslo press conference photo of John drawing a swastika on Sid's arm it's gotten a bit much so here's a piece on Punk and the Swastika.

First of all, THE SEX PISTOLS WERE NOT NAZIS, this should be pretty obvious to anyone with half a brain once they've heard the lyrics to any of their songs. The band (and the original punk rock in general) were about originality, individuality and anti-conformity, all absolute opposites to the nazis' ideas. That alone answers the question.

The Sex Pistols - still making enemies
The band wore swastikas as well as upside down crosses, pictures of Karl Marx and Buenaventura Durruti quotes. Funny how no-one ever asks me if they were communists, maybe that's because that particular form of totalitarianism is more accepted? They also wore a lot of different very explicit homosexual images but I have yet to hear anyone ask about that. It was all there to make a statement, to shock people and force them to react in some way. Some got it, most didn't.
I honestly believe it's a question of intelligence. That, and having an open mind and being poor and angry.
If anyone got into nazism because of it they soon left punk rock, and good riddance too. I don't want stupidity on my side anyway.

The Child Molesters - a healthy mix
of statutory rape and nazi propaganda.
If you can't see the difference between
them and some white power outfit you're
just plain old stupid.

Punk rock was not some sugar-coated background muzak supplied by MTV and it was never meant to be harmless, bland, complacent, happy and ready-made for mass consumtion.

I got into punk rock more than 20 years ago. Being a punk rocker meant you got into arguements if not fights every single day. I was only 10 when I was first beaten bad enough to be hospitalised. Media, cops, school and everyone else told us punk was something bad, so it only attracted the negative kids who didn't care if the authorities hated them - or more to the point, wanted them to. If you want to show your history teacher that you hate him you tell him you like Hitler or Stalin. It's as simple as that.

Now that the industry have decided to re-package punk as a happy-go-lucky pop phenomena you get millions of kids thinking they're punk rockers when in reality they find the original punk ideas just as shocking as the establishment did a quarter of a century ago. Not to say that there aren't any good new bands around, 'cause there are, you just won't find them on MTV.
Media has filtered out most of the controversy surrounding the Sex Pistols, only Sid's heroin addiction and John's safety pinned clothes are left in the watered down version presented now. That's why rock writers are allowed to call Never Mind The Bollocks a classic album and MTV can show Pretty Vacant once or twice a year.

I guess I should be happy that some people find out that there's more to it than that. And that they're shocked by it. Can't wait 'til some of you realise that God Save The Queen wasn't a celebration of the royal family and that (shock horror) Bodies was not a christian pro-life song.

Choke on it, hippies. And run back to the disco.

Token 1977 punk. I doubt that Hitler would have approved.

Germs' singer Darby Crash too wore a lot of nazi regalia. He was also a homosexual junkie. Anyone out there who thinks he would have wanted the nazi party in power? I'm sure there is, but then again if I wrote that Sid Vicious was working on German nuclear bombs during WW2 some would believe that too.
