| This piece from Hallands Posten was published mid-week just before the gig on Friday July 15 1977. It says that back in England the group is banned from playing live as well as having their single God Save The Queen banned from airplay, but are now doing their first foreign tour, in Sweden. The reasons behind the bans are according to the paper their public performances. The example given is that singer Johnny Rotten sometimes ends their gigs by urinating on the audience (this is a classic 70's myth that was repeated in tabloids worldwide). |
There's nothing mentioned about the royalists' backlash or the band's lyrics. The old safety-pins-and-fish-hooks-through-the-cheek description of
punk rock is here though. On a more positive side it says that the band refuse to play big places and that they find the contact
with the audience important. The piece ends with a note saying that it was outside the club Stranden (Beach Disco, where the Sex Pistols are to play) that
the tragic mid-summer 1977 fights happened. (Virgin press photo by Dennis Morris from the GSTQ promo filming at the Marquee May 24 1977) |
