|TOXIC REASONS - 20TH ANNIVERSARY
REUNION CONCERT (Big Beef Video)
On October 2 1999 The Toxic Reasons reunited for one gig in their hometown Dayton, Ohio. This gig featured their original line-up. The band released some really good stuff in the early 80's and then continued, with different members, to release some not-so-great records (although songs like Destroyer, included here, were pretty good). The first album and 7''s are Class A Punk Rock mixed with a bit of early US Hard Core. If you don't know what they sounded like D.O.A. is the best reference - early D.O.A. and early Toxic Reasons songs used almost the exact same guitar riffs. And what great riffs they were.
The tape opens with their classic first 7'' - War Hero - and is followed by more originals like White Noise (no, not the SLF song) as well as covers like Shape Of Things To Come and Alternative Ulster (yes, the SLF song). This part of the film is taken from a rehearsal the day before the actual gig. I didn't expect them too be this good, really a pleasant suprise. Some versions of their songs are actually better here than on the old records!
The second part is the Canal Street Tavern show. The band set a club record for both attendance and bar receipts at this gig, so you know it must have been good. And it was. Ok, so singer Big Ed Pittman has become ..eh.. Slightly Bigger Ed Pittman and they're all around 40 years old, but the performance is great. Most of the songs are taken from their first album Independence. Their very first drummer (War Hero 7'' only) joins them for Somebody Help Me and God Bless America. The band encores with the singles Ghost Town and War Hero. Then comes back to do even more songs. The sound quality is pretty good for a live video. You can probably hear what the songs are like even if you haven't heard the records before, but get the re-issues along with this anyway.
I think they only did this 'cause they wanted to, not to cash in on their KBD/Bloodstains legend and this video is a benefit tape too, so no ''sell-out'' cries from the cheap seats, ok?
Reunions are usually crap, this one wasn't. Wish I'd been there.
