BLACKPOOL ROX II - issue #9
Editor ANDY HIGGINS has given the old fanzine a much needed extreme makeover, and as always a face lift comes with a price tag. It is no longer free, but so what?

This issue has the liner notes for the Volume 2 of The Ugly Truth About Blackpool CD series. There's also interviews with bands and people in the scene, reviews and rants. Some interesting articles and thoughts by both the editor and others added to this issue too. Still a bit on the university student side of things but very much an improvement compared to previous issues.

It looks a lot better than the old news letter / book report computer print out it use to be, though it still isn't exactly cut and paste punk rock art. 28 pages for 2 UK Pounds.

NARDWUAR THE HUMAN SERVIETTE VS. BEV DAVIES: A 2007 PUNK ROCK CALANDER
A 2007 PUNK ROCK CALENDAR (Mint Records)
I think the full titel of this is actually something like NARDWUAR THE HUMAN SERVIETTE VS. BEV DAVIES: A 2007 PUNK ROCK CALANDER. NARDWUAR is a nerdy radio host and punk rock historian type guy and BEV DAVIES is a fairly well known rock photographer. They're both Canadians.

This calendar has a 2-page spread for every month between December 2006 to December 2007, and an additional spread for 2008. Every month is one band photo by BEV DAVIES and an interview with her about the pic and the artist. The bands are SUBHUMANS, MOTORHEAD, AVENGERS, BLACK FLAG, ADAM & THE ANTS, D.O.A., JOHNNY THUNDERS, CLASH, POINTED STICKS, GO-GO'S, DEAD KENNEDYS, GANG OF FOUR, RAMONES and FASTBACKS (a young DUFF MCKAGAN playing drums wearing a D.O.A. t-shirt). The rest of the 40 pages are more pics and interviews including LOOTERS (from the film Ladies And Gentlemen; The Faboulous Stains), STIFF LITTLE FINGERS, RUDE NORTON, CAPTAIN BEEFHEART and WASP.

All the photos are really good and the interviews are well researched and interesting. Did I mentioned that the photos are all from the bands' early years? I don't know the price but whatever it is you should buy it.

SURREAL ISTANBUL - issue #1
This is the new art fanzine from CHRIS BIRD who did DEBASER. The new one is all cartoonish drawings by the editor and nothing else. They are all very simular and reminds me of J CRAWFORD who use to do comics for FLIPSIDE.

There's 60 pages of drawings here and appearantly it's for free, so if you're interested in underground art from Turkey this is a good deal. I expect he wants the postage paid, but for all info just contact CHRIS at cbird@superonline.com.
