My name is Earl Vanze but everyone calls me just Earl. I am a 6th grader.
Our school website is at
http://schenectady.k12.ny.us/NASAExplorerSchool/index.htm
I'm
posted
there
a few times. This is a great pi website! I am trying to memorize up to 500
digits of pi and I would enter our school talent show I don't intend to
win
though). I am the most intelligent student in our school. So far, I've
memorized 50 digits. I memorized the first 25 digits like it was my name
continuously without any pauses. Most people think I am amazing even
though
I only tell them the first 25 digits.

Hello Olle the Greatest,

Well hello Olle. I
thouroughly enjoyed
your pages! Strangely enough, you
sound a lot like me. I'm memorizing pi (my goal is only 1000 right now), I
extensively studied aerodynamics on my own during high school, I love math
and physics, I seem to always make graphs and take notes of random stuff,
and I drink WAY too much coffee. My whole family is from Norway and I love
talking to other Scandinavian people. Well, thanks for a rather amusing
website. Maybe if you feel so inclined, you could write back!

to get an advanced degree for no particular reason.

Hey!
I'm Peter Fitzpatrick (20y/o) (currently cramming for my integral calculus
exam tomorrow...) and I LOVE your site, Ollie! It's great! I am in a
mechanical engineering program at St Clair College (Windsor, Ontario,
Canada) and from here going to Lakehead University (Thunder Bay, Ontario,
Canada). So, needless to say, I too, have a deep appreciation for the pi!
Just wanted to say that I love your site... especially the amount of coffee
you drank! That's great!!
Keep up the great site!
Peter Fitzpatrick, 23/10 2005
Windsor? My great grandfather went there for a couple of years to work in the late 19th century... came back in 1900 I think. The house is still there =)
More coffee is coming up soon...
I enjoyed the site immensley. It was very strange, though.. in a good way. I
hope you don't change a thing about it. I live in Kentucky, known as the
blue grass state, U.S.A. I once went on a trip to Norway to a little town
called Harstad, a couple of hours from Narvick, and definately noware near
Olso. I'm glad I had the chance to visit Europe. It was fun.

well, pi pi pi. Thats all we're doing in maths right now and we get a lolly
for each decimal place we get. THIS IS BORING! as interesting as pi is and
could be, bring lollies into it doesn't help that we have to memorise all
those numbers. (well as many as I can remember) I think instead we should
get a pie for each number of pi we remember. Do you get it...pie and
pi...well i think im funny!
Ness, 1/9 2005
Olle, you truly are the greatest!
I wanted to tell you about a local high school that is running a "pi"
fundraiser--that is, their math department is trying to earn $3141.59 by
selling a pi t-shirt that they designed.
You can see it here:
http://www.pidye.com/thestorezone/product_info.php?products_id=403
We'd really appreciate it if you got the word out to *everyone in the pi
universe*. That way they can reach their goal.
Good luck with your website!

hi there! I'm esther bloor, but then the email addy gives that away anyway-
the reason I'm mailing you is to request that you remove my name from the

rid of where my full name crops up on the net. This is not a rejection of
Pi! Anyway, I got my count up to about 370dp, so my listing is a bit
obsolete.

I like the pi memorizing technique. It's much faster than the old one that I
used. And now I'm going to sign up for the 100 club.
-The Petronator, 25/1 2005
Hey Olle,
we were wondering how you learned 6000 digits of pi... You're the greatest;-)
See you later alligator!
Agnes and Steffi, 13/12 2004
the billionth number of pi is 9
my name is Billy helix, 6/11 2004
I am interested in the memorization of pi and related techniques, but the
problem is to get an accurate net number. Forinstance, pi to 10 000 places
Wikisource, has wrong digits in the sixth line, groups three and four. Or,
2ooo places of pi ( JOC/EFR ends with the digits 901, which is also wrong.
Perhaps the Gutenberg is the most trustworthy. Which one do you recommend?
My task at the moment is 2000 digits, but I have to have an accurate source!
Best wishes, paul michelet, 20/9 2004
I'd say Gutenberg, or the joyofpi.com, or using a nice program such as
mathematica =)
hey i think its awsome u can recall all those # i think u have a great
talent.
im pav 9/9 2004
Well I don't have a talent, really... just had some spare time a couple
of years ago... =)
I found this page when I surfed around for information on pi. Pretty nice
website though. I agree with you that Macs are real computers, they don't
crash. But unfortunately my parents think it sucks so...to bad for me. I've
got 50 digits so far, looking forward to join the 100-digits club. Can you
mail me any techniques of memorizing? I beat my math teacher, he can only do
20 digits, but I'll get 100 by the next 24 hours. My friends think I'm nuts
my teachers too ( but not the math teacher) everybody just doesn't have
creativity. That's why there's not many people like me and you. By the way,
how much is your IQ? Thanks very much for the information. Hope to see you
expand you website.

I learned 600 digits when I was 18 years old, 25 years ago, way before the
Internet existed. I do now remember 100 digits (but could certainly very
easily get back to 200 or more, I did it two or three years ago). Do I
qualify for 600 digits? I honestly certify that I did so.

Hi Olle: I am not a drinker, I am not a smoker and I am living a sober

But thanks anyway, it's so stimulating.

I don't really want to be in this club but i can remember over 200 digits
through a memory system called the "major system" i amase people with this
and i can't prove to you that i can remember as many as i want using this
technique, this computer is no proof so you may think i'm a liar, i gave
up remembering pi a while ago, though its still in my head. Nice
website

I enjoyed your site very much. I am new on the net, and I really had no
idea that there was a group of people that enjoy memorizing Pi. I started
memorizing Pi on my own after downloading a thousand digits of Pi on a
friends computer. I added about ten
digits every couple of weeks, I was satisfied with 100 digits for about
six months, but then decided to keep on going. I quit at 220 digits, my
all time record weight at the time. After a few months at 220 digits, I
just recited 100 digits about once p er week. I have done this for
perhaps the last 9 months or so. Starting a couple of months ago I
started to go for 10 days to 2 weeks between Pi checks. My method is
basicly memorizing keystroke patterns (like a maze). My time for 100
digits is about 45 seconds. With a two week period of not even thinking
about Pi, there was no diffrence in my time. Then I went for 3 weeks, and
it took me about 20 minutes to get the digits and about another 10
minutesto put them in the proper order. But I was right . Since I found
your
site, I have been inspired to go for some more digits. I have gained 50
digits the first week (they seemed so familliar). This last week I have
gained another 20, so I am at 170 and I am going for at least 300
thistime, or maybe 3 14. I find it odd that I can know and recite
hundreds ofdigits, but not have the slightest clue what the next one is.
Againthanks for the web site.

That's an interesting observation, I've thought about it myself... why
is it so
hard to know the "next" digit... =)
Hi, my name is Anssi Mäkinen, and I'm from Finland. I decided to
report my
decimals by "some other alternatives", since at the moment I remember only
a hundred or so. On October 4th 2000, I remembered 2,146 decimals of pi,
supervised by local press. I als o reported this to Guinness, but sadly,
it was too late to make into the '01 edition, which was the last one to
feature Finnish records :( I did, however, have the first ever Finnish
record of 1,050 decimals, first published in the '96 edition.

Hi. I'm Devon Shore. I joined this club back in 1996, when I was 7. I'm
the one who has the recital option. I stumbled across this site today and
I remembered the three days back in third grade when I did nothing but
memorize a series of seemingly meaning less numbers. It was a nice
reminder of what an odd kid I was. I was just wondering if I still hold
the record of the youngest person to waste a chunk of their life that they
will never get back in a fruitless pursuit of previously unheard-of levels
of nerdosity. Well, keep up the good work.

Its
amazing you have so much free time on your hands to memorize 6000 didgets

should probably seek counseling and try and get some friends. Also,
consider

very
much.

Olle, I have no idea what attracted me to your page. I'm an English Major at the University of Delaware. I took a simplistic math course my Freshman year of college just to get it out of the way.
I guess that I've always been fascinated with pi since I started receiving chain letters over e-mail. I joked with a friend of mine that I would write out pi to ten thousand digits, and store it in my files,
then, instead of flaming someone, I'd just send them a pi in return for annoying me.
Ever since then, I've had a srange fascination with pi, and when I was biding my time on Netscape at work, I found your pi page on the useless pages.
>From your pi page, I just decided to look around, and I must say that I'm very
impressed! Unfortunately, I cannot refer you to my own homepage as I have not yet written one.
You see, despite scoring higher than you on the nerdity test, I've never learned how to program (let alone program on the Net).
Good Luck to you with finishing your degree!
-Mike Rosen, University of Delaware, Newark, Delaware (originally from Santa Monica and Simi Valley, California), 15/1 1997
Thanx, I'll do my very best with my degree, like leaving this computer NOW

Och du slutar väl kl tre.
Sitter i biblioteket tills klockan 10.00.
Anders, 8/3 1996
Interesting stuff! Although, forgive me if you
can, I'm not as in to pi as you are, I still
thought your facts, links, and witty quips were
just right for something so useless as the pursuit
of pi digits. Keep up the good work, and I'll keep
checking until you've memorized all the infin-
tesimal digits of pi (and are consequently
reduced to a vegetable state).
pifully,
Anne Thomas, Utah, 6/3 1996
I doubt I'll ever become a vegetable, a cactus maybe, but not a vegetable. On the other hand, I doubt I can memorize infinitely many digits either, so I think I'm pretty safe =)
I found these pages quite interesting actually. Everyone I know thinks I am very weird to try to memorize the decimal approximation of Pi so I was pleased to learn that there are other people out there who do the same. So far I have 57 digits memorized, but I have been trying only for about four days. I plan to memorize at least one hundred by the end of March.
Pi equals 3.141592653689793238462643383279502884197169399375105820974... not bad for less than a week of work.
Michael J. Tilden, 5/3 1996
There are LOTS of people out there, who are just like you. Keep up the
goo work, looking forward to adding you to the members of the
100-club. Just make sure you change the erratic 6...
Good deal, but I kind of wonder what would possess anybody but myself to
put that much effort into web pages.

Hi again. Love your records. Beat you on the useless
walk though. I had to go to a friend's place, and
had all day to do it. So I took all day.
(Like you, I seem to live a fascinating life. I can
understand why others are so jealous.)
Oh and: you actually can leave a message I'll be sure
to hear about if you send it to the happy Borto, whose
page is "La petite boutique de Borto" (in french,
german or english, maybe in a while in japanese,
but no swedish though. nobody's perfect). I can't
remember the actual address, so have fun searching.
(actually, his page directed me to yours via PI,
so this is really a return ticket /-))
JR, 27/2 1996
I'm at a friend's place
on the net, being without anything netlike myself
this year (that is how the cursus goes).
I love silly things, like puns, but I must admit
people getting worked up about useless knowledge
are not usually that fun, a bit like people who
provide answers much too long in a place like this
;-).
On the other hand, I'm finally quite sorry, the
utility of knowing even 3.1416 being what it is
(don't overreact, it's just an approximation), not
to be able to join the 2-club (not without cheating,
that is).
Important information: to remember the first several
digits, and if you speak, read, or tolerate french,
try this: "Que j'aime ` faire apprendre ce nombre
utile aux sages". It goes on, but I don't know any
more of it. If you don't understand a word of it,
memorize it! It can't possibly be more boring than
memorizing pi ;-).
(BTW, I'm french. It's nice to be, however a bit
trying when it comes to meeting friends from NZ.)

I know that sentence, I have it on my Pipages
Pi is my friend too...

Hi.
I am a math student at Memorial University.
I am compelled by the beauty of Pi, but when I attempted to write a fortran program to try and estimate values of pi the answer was 4?? For integers larger than 16 an error appeared saying FLOATING EXEPTION.?
This is strange because on my calculator it works just fine. So, ...?

Ted Rolle, 16/2 1996
like, um, where's the content, dude?
loose the background pictures of PI, especially
when you have such poor taste in colors.
party,
Gordon, 8/2 1996
Content? Grow up! =) And the colors? Easy for you to say, your pages are black! (Thanx for letting me know your opinion, ok? =)
Yeah.
SS@sscontr.pp.fi, 4/2 1996
I'm planning to start a club for truly great people
and you'll probably be the only person except me,
myself and all my other big egos to qualify for
a membership.
Keep in touch if you're interested
Sebastian Schattauer, 2/2 1996
I don't have a big ego, I'm just the Greatest =)
Hi Olle, I visited your pages to get
the short pi sentence,
which I forgot.
You know, it is the shortest one!
About your pages:
Fantastic; really very nice!
greetings
Antreas, 1/2 1996
Thanx, this is getting over my head =)
I did not include my return address because I dont
want anyone knowing who critisized them. This page
is ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE to use with lynx. No, I dont
mean "Links", I mean the web-browser called "lynx"
and YES there is such a thing. No offense or anything
nobody@nowhere, 30/1 1996
Note that this was submitted from the "like" page =) A hint: Are you having problems with Lynx (that's an animal and a snowmobile), use Netscape 1.1 =) I warned you on the front page but maybe you slipped in through the backdoor?
Plain Jane......
Anonymous, 28/1 1996
I had a goodtime visiting. Pretty colours.
Pam Nolan, 28/1 1996
Hi, Olle, it's me; Merlijn! I just visited your pages again and I still like them! There's nothing more to say....
bye bye
Merlijn, 12/12 1995
Thanx =) I'll call you later =)
Hi, here's KLAUS GRABNER mailing,
I'm an AUSTRIAN exchange-student here in ICELAND!!!
I can't sleep before shouting the first 3 digits of Pi!!!
Nicest PIshes from Reykjavik, HANG LOOSE!
Klaus, 8/12 1995
I hope you will get help for that! =)
Trying to beat your record in the pi contest
Tomas Egense, 6/12 1995
Do that! I could need some competition =)
I love guestbooks. And I love completley freaked out collections. I collect bicyclemarks and meatgrinders.(or whatever it's called...) This is silly. Why do I write in English when I'm sure you'd understand Swedish? Anyone's got an odd meatgrinder out there? Not an Husqvarna or Bolinders, I've got all their models. Mail me, maybe then we could swap silly things:-)
Patrik Astrosmurf Eriksson,
19/11 1995
Yep, I understand swedish =) but english is ok. It's easier too, I don't have to translate it
Nice pages, I took the time to look around...
I like that, you are crazy, a quality for me...!!
you are the greatest Olle, dig it. :)
Simon Plouffe, 29/10 1995
I'm not THAT crazy now, am I?
Olof Palme var också rätt duktig i matematik.
Men det gick ju inte så bra med honom.
097878 28/10 1995
Näe, men det berodde knappast på mattekunskaperna. Dessutom gick det bra fram till 1986.
Anyone who can memorize all the digits of pi is so cool...
wow...
Randy Peterson, 24/10 1995
Hey Olle, you must have a lot of time, don't you?
Evertime I visit your pages, they have changed,
things are new, great, colorful ... I like it.
Keep on workin'!
KING WASI I, 23/10 1995
Hej, OTG!
You are crazy! =)
-Eve 16/10 1995
Well so are you, dear, so are you =)
Hi (i don't know your name, sorry)
I just read your "club of 100"-page. well, somehow nerd, but funny. (for the usual nerd pages lack any fun)
What you forgot is the club for people like me, the Club For People Who've Memorized 5 Digits of Pi. (14159!) But I like your club. I will start to memorize just tomorrow - or on Saturday.
Bye.
Elmar (Elmar Strallhofer, University of Economics, Vienna, Austria)
It's Olle the Greatest, but you can call me Olle =) There is no club
that I know of for people who've memorized 5 digits, but there is one for
people
who can't
remember more than two.
Hello Olle, your page is great !!!
I showed it to Peter and Jon Borwein and they liked
it too, very cool !!!
We like your background...
Dig it !! PI it !
Simon, 11/10 1995
Cool.
I can't figure out your "wonderful" puzzle, though... I guess that's what I get for being a business major.
If you want, check out my Eve Fan Club Page (It's still under heavy construction (being about a day old)
Juanune, 24/9 1995
I found your web pages an interesting way to spend an evening! However, one really needs a graphical web browser (which I don't have) to fully appreciate your games.
ld10348@cedarnet.org, 21/9 1995
I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you'll be back soon with Netscape.
You're just great!
Albert Washüttl, 19/9 1995
Ok ok, take it easy now, give me some hate too
Du vet att vi älskar dig.
Andreas, 18/9 1995
Yep =)
I know 10 digits of Pi. Can I start a 10-club?
Heather, 8/9 1995
Go for it!!!
Goddag Olle! Hur är livet i Norrland? Här, som är i Göteborg, JH, håller vi på att bli cybertjejer. Vi har en guide, som jag tror att du känner. Hejdå!
Anna Pettersson, 8/9 1995
Hi, just want to have a look & signup. :) I'm Autrijus, a 14-year-old junior
high school student in Taiwan, and also a member of 100-Club(with a hint). Nice
too visit here. Anyway, I've to go to dinner, Cheers!
Autrijus, 6/9 1995
Loved 'em so much I want to go back and do it again!!
Kristi L Waterworth, 28/8 1995
Hej`ru.
Jag var bara tvungen att skriva en rad efter att ha
sett din skivsamling. Det är inte ofta man ser
Dead Kennedys i andra människors skivsamlingar,
och i synnerhet inte tillsammans med My Bloody
Valentine, Union Carbide Productions, Whipped
Cream, Thin Lizzy och i synnerhet the Pixies!
(Det enda som fattas är några Zappa-skivor)
I övrigt har jag inte tittat så mycket, men det
jag har sett fägnar mitt öga. Jag kommer att kolla
övriga sidor inom kort.
mvh /Johan Ögren,
26/8 1995
What a KICK!!! I'll be back for the rest!!!
dewashbu@atnet.net, 4/8 1995
All I can say is you kept me awake, you taskmaster!
George Torres, 26/8 1995
You stupid bastard!!!!!!
We wasted an hour on your game to finally find
Kennedy, Ford, Truman, Jefferson, Pierce and Reagan
which, according to your description, makes for
NFNPINNT.html - just that there /is/ no such page!!
We are devastated! Destroyed! After all that hard work
we want our price! You have scarred us for the rest
of our life!!! We will never be able to laugh again!
a frustrated president-
search team ..., 30/7 1995
There are eleven people out there who've solved it. No one has ever complained about my instructions. The presidents are correct, so who's stupid? =)
Interesting. I came in through Todd of the Twinkie page, and noted a recurring EVE-obsession in your clique. L8r.
Chris Pepper, 23/7 1995
Finally - someone who understands. *sigh* Being in the faculty of mathematics, you'd think such an understanding would be common, if not given...
Jen Alexander, 30/6 1995
Loved the thousand digits club, and I might tackle a hundred myself.
I'm a writer. Got a minute? I'm working on a script for a friend, a
one-woman piece, and the backbone of the whole thing is going to be her
reciting as many digits of pi as possible. Okay, I'm not too sure what the
*rest* of the piece will be, but I'm working on that. This *isn't* a play
about those wacky geeks who memorize numbers. We were looking for a framework
that gave the character an obsessive activity to come back to time and again,
and we were looking for a topic where we (the actor and I) could meet on common
ground. Since we are both recovering math grads...
Okay, now I'm lacing together neat number stuff into scenes and monologues,
and trying to tie it to pieces of pi as memory aids, and a friend tells me
that the pros (such as yourself) have some nifty sentences they use. Is he
putting me on, or are there traditional sentences where the number of letters
in each word is a digit of pi? Tell me more. Tell me lore. Tell me any old thing that you think is great about pi.
See, I'm a big fan of numbers and math in general, but I never got into pi
in any particular depth. So... research.
Wanna help? Or point me to someone else even more helpful?
Thanks.
Linda Carson, 16/7 1995
Pi's kind of cool. I used to remember it a long time ago but never got very far
(463 digits or so, which is pretty crummy) before I stopped. I used to speed train at 100 digits and can still do this recitation in 13 seconds. There are several things about pi that you have not stuck in though.
Anyway, this page might start me on the road to having another crack at pi again (but many more digits this time hopefully)
Richard Carr, 19/6 1995
I tried 100, 12.5 secs. I guess swedish is a better language =)
Since he has no homepage, I linked to the A-page, where Richard has contributed a lot

Translation: Call me and we'll party! =)
Dina sidor speglar din personlighet väl!
Fredrik, 11/6 1995
I don't think I'll ever translate that =)
I was slightly fascinated to find this page on
the Web. Back in first year university, I was
one of those nerdy types who though memorizing
PI was a cool thing to do. No one else around
me was, but still, I persisted. There was a
fascinating book (or two) on the subject, along
with a handy printout of 40,000 digits on the
inner front and back sleeves.
At some point, my sister and I made a bet over it.
We bet a mere $1 as to whether I could memorize
1000 digits. I think there was a time limit of
one month. Well, the time came, and I did it.
I wrote them out, and she spot checked it. 1000
digits, and I had that $1 in hand. (whoopee...)
This was back in 1980 or 1981, so I have long
since lost track of a good 90% of the ordering
of those repetitive lowly 10 digits. I have
tried to keep up a hundred or so over the years.
Here's the best I can do from memory, as I have
no printed source handy to check:

Well, there you go.
Ken P, 8/6 1995
82 digits, too bad you didn't make it to the 100-club =( Please try again =)
(Ken's sister, Linda, has verified the story)
I just want to say, "Hi,Olle!" You seem like a nice guy.
Regards, Cheryl Herin Tucson, AZ 4/6 1995
Thanx. I am a nice guy, and I looooooooooooove Arizona =)
Okey, I've read them and, well, I like them...
Bobo, 30/5 1995
Emil, 29/5 1995
A short translation: Thank you for this very good page! This is probably why internet was created! (yep) But why is it so important to remember Pi? (what kinda question is that????) Emil asked me if he could be a supportive member of my 100-club. Of course!
Kul sida!!
Kent, 24/5 1995
Translation: Funny page!!
Det känns skönt att det finns någon som lyckats
åstadkomma ännu mer smörja än jag. / I'm glad that
there is someone who has been able to create even
more crap than me.
Johan, 23/5 1995
Nu ha ja sett allt fint hos dig, nästan. Ja tyckte de va kulit. Nu ska ja o Johan (kompis) göra färdit en inlupp i numanalys.
Ja kommer o hälsar på dej ijenn snart!!
Hedas, 22/5 1995
A short translation: Now I've seen everything nice at your pages, almost. I thought it was fun. C U soon!!
Cool.
