Put in a pan 3 liters of milk, little vanilla pod and 800 grames of sugar. Put on the fire and mix with a wooden spoon till the sugar disapears. Let it boil on strong fire, add half coffee spoon of sodium bicarbonate (aka baking soda -thx nattie-) and let it keep boiling. When it starts getting thick, have to mix continuously it with a wooden spoon not to get burned or stuck to the pan. When starts getting brownish and thick...you get some out of the pan and put it on a glass dish, let it get cold, if doesn't slides is that is ready! so you get it out of the fire and put it inside glass container. The baking soda gives to the dulce de leche a more brillant colour, but have to put just just a little if not gets very dark. And my granny suggest to keep mixing it with the wooden spoon till its almost cold (is boring, but is the way it has to be done)...
